We are a group of about 25 dedicated volunteers who are planning to get a full-time radio station licence for Huntingdonshire; we are a registered charity (no.1060739) and a Ltd company. We are a not for profit organisation.
We broadcast every year to St Ives, St Neots, Huntingdon and all the surrounding villages on 87.7FM. We have been operating since 1995.
As an area, we are on the fringe of Q103 - Cambridge, B97 - Bedford/Luton, Hereward - Peterborough, Vibe FM - Cambridge & Peterborough and BBC local radio Cambridge & Peterborough. We believe Huntingdonshire deserves its own radio station.
The idea of the station is to play 'Quality Familiar Music' ie. music you instantly recognise and probably know the words to, and to have as much community involvement as possible. To date we have involved over 100 community groups, which makes HCR a real community station.
Every hour we try and play 2 X 60's, 2 X 70's, 2 X 80's, 2 X 90's and 2 from the 2000's. This gives a good spread of music to all audience profiles; what I mean is 'there is something for everyone'.
We never play Rap Music, we did a series of surveys in 1995 and 1997 and most returns said they did not want Rap on a community station. We also aim to only play only 6 commercials an hour, two every 20 minutes. This stops the clutter of blocks of 4 or 6 commercials, as played by most other commercial stations.
Our aim is to broadcast every day of the year, 24 hours a day, giving out local news, weather and traffic information, with an emphasis on "LOCAL".
Funding has been supplied by over 50 local businesses who sponsor various programmes and advertise during the various shows, we have also had support from Huntingdonshire District Council, Godmanchester Town Council, St Ives Town Council, Huntingdon Town Council, St Neots Town Council, Woodgreen Animal Shelters and T-Mobile.
