Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child has been associated with HCR104fm since the beginning of our RSL (Restricted Service Licence) days, that’s more than 25 years. This year’s representative from Samaritan’s Purse  (the umbrella charity), Sue Shorter, a long time volunteers with the charity, came into the studio to speak to Peter Rogers on his “Brunch til Lunch” show to tell our listeners about how they could get involved in this extremely practical and time limited charity.

Sue brought with her one of the famous “shoe boxes” which the charity promotes and asked donors to fill the box with small gifts for children of different ages. 25 years ago the Huntingdon area sent 9,000 boxes out to children in Russian Baltic countries which were breaking away and going out on their own. The deprivation of the areas of Eastern Europe and extreme poverty in which, especially the children were living, left people from our local churches wondering what they could do to help. Someone hit on the simple idea of packing a shoe box with appropriate small gifts for the children at Christmas time and Huntingdonshire joined other areas in filing and sending out 16,000 of these wonderful packages. The UK sent out 850,000 boxes to 17 countries last year.  This year some of the charity’s West Anglian region boxes will be directed towards Libya.

This year’s boxes need to be filled and taken to the collection points between 1st and 18th November. Huntingdon collection points are the Methodist church in the High Street and Shoe Zone off the Market Square.
