student zone
The Student Zone, is a brand new programme from Huntingdon Community Radio (HCRfm). The Student Zone is a new show made for our youth audiences brought to you by the Student Group, anchored by Russell Bundy. The Student Group is open to anyone Year 10 and above. Our presenters and producers will come together for the hour, so let the Student Group shine and talk to everyone through the radio; we are here to entertain you and to bring the local community to you.
The Student Zone will have a range of topics each week, keeping you updated in subjects that our team feels are of interest or concern to younger people. The show even has a dedicated topic for Good News so that you can share anything that you have done on the radio with us! The Student Zone will play a variety of music, the sort that appeals to the students including some songs from the Top 40 and just amazing classics of the generation of today. YOUR input is vital and there are plenty of ways to get in touch with us.
Chris Gidman is the Student Zone producer as well as the leader of the Student Group. He will make sure the content is slick, balanced and good to the ear, and that the team of reporters and presenters are kept on their toes, bringing younger people in Huntingdonshire the best news, music and features the Students can offer.
“My aim here at HCRfm is to encourage the youth in the area to take their first steps within the media industry. Youth today are always reported as bad news in the media, this has to stop and The Student Group is here to prove the media wrong.” - Chris Gidman
The Student Zone has a team of reporters with good knowledge of their subject areas. They will bring you latest news on what is hip with gadgets, the fab and the dud new film and video game releases, the very latest in female and male fashion, make-up and hair trends, plus all the local sports action and a whole lot more! The Student Group is here to get any important information to you. On some occasions the Student Zone may have some shows dedicated to some of your social problems, including stress of exams and other areas that are important to you. If you have any ideas for the show please send suggestions to the presenters/producers listed on this page. Any one of them will look forward to hearing from you.
HCRfm provides students with an opportunity to learn about radio presentation and production. Isaac Brindley joined the Student team in 2008 and is now working with Ray Godby as a co-presenter of Saturday Sport and will continue to do so. HCRfm can be a great place to start a career, gaining new skills from reading the local news to producing the exciting shows like the Student Zone. Students used to start off at HCRfm reading the local news and helping out behind the scenes, but now the youth members of HCRfm now take part on other shows and do as much as they can to help HCRfm out. Chris Gidman started at HCRfm in 2006 as part of a new Student Scheme and he is still with HCRfm today taking on far greater responsibilities as a Student Representative.
Students from year 10 are considered, and some come from school/college or university, those already working and others seeking employment. To be part of the Student group, you simply need to be between the age of 14 to 25 and have a good taste of the community around you. Being part of HCRfm involves some effort and sharing of skills, but it is a great way to mix with others of all ages.
Apart from learning new skills, and helping to create some great live radio, there is the added benefit this experience adds to your CV’s. All HCRfm Student volunteers may claim accreditation for their hours through Young Lives, and experience at HCRfm adds sparkle to any work, college or university application, for which HCRfm will provide references when required.
If you wish to join HCRfm’s Student Team, contact Chris Gidman, Student Representative for an Application Pack. The Student Group only has a limit of 12 students at any one time, so you may have to join a short waiting list, but don’t worry everyone is going to get a chance. If you are under 18 please make sure that you consult/inform your parents and/or guardian that you have approached HCRfm with a view to joining the Student Group.
You can follow the HCRfm Student group on the dedicated Facebook page and check out our films on YouTube.
