David Brockman

David began working in broadcasting in 1972 at the BBC after leaving school, where he helped edit the TV pages of Radio Times, not only on a range of television programmes from That’s Life with Esther Rantzen, and Multi-Coloured Swap Shop with Noel Edmonds, but he also produced some live “Platform” programmes for BBC Radio London. He spent many years in youth work, community work and education, assisting smaller and larger organisations with their public relations needs.

Over the years David has provided feature material for various ITV stations, Anglia, LWT, Thames, Border, Tyne-Tees, West Country and Yorkshire, alongside Channel 4, Five TV, UK Living, and BBC News 24. As well as BBC local radio, he broadcast on the first week of London Broadcasting, now LBC, and provided material for BBC Radio’s 1, 2 and 4.

After arriving in Huntingdon in 2001, David spent time at Hinchingbrooke Hospital Radio, and like many before him, migrated to HCRfm in 2005, where he mainly produced Over To You HCRfm’s community affairs programme. In 2006 he was appointed Executive Producer, and agreed to set up and manage the HCRfm student programme, and also assisted with content of the web site.

From 2007 he presented Sunday Supplement, and edited Spotlight the Friday “special” programme relating to local arts and events, presented since 2008 by Chris Gidman. After HCRfm was awarded the full-time licence by Ofcom, David became a member of HCRfm’s senior management team. The HCRfm student team is now approaching its’ maximum of 12, and many former students are at university or moving into careers in media. David conceived the idea of HCRfm’s new soap Huntsford, and is actively producing the drama, with a large team of writers, editors and directors. Huntsford will go out Monday, Wednesday and Fridays for five minutes, with a weekend omnibus on Sunday Supplement.

What would be your nightmare day?
Oh I had years of those when I was bullied day in and day out at school, each time it was sheer unadulterated hell. Having come through it, I am proud to play a key part in HCRfm’s feature and drama programmes, where we can broadcast information and advice to prevent all sorts of bullying still going on at work, and school, often these days cyber-bullying via mobiles and pc’s.

What is on your CD player?
I have tons of CD’s from world music, all the Eurovision songs, film and television themes, as well as classical and pop. I mainly use ITunes on the lap top, where about 10,000 tunes are stored, the CD players are redundant.

If you were not doing radio what would you like to do?
Apart from HCRfm I have a communications role in London, but if I really had the choice, I would work with (NGO’s) Non Government Organisations involved in youth and education in Africa, where I have travelled.
