Bright Light in the Darkness

The “Over to You” programme, each day at 7pm, talks to many local people who are involved in our community in many different ways.   Norman Knapper, spoke to Erika Brown of the Huntingdonshire Blind Society this week  – a very local charity who have their headquarters in St Mary’s Street just around the corner from HCR104fm’s own studios.

The Society was founded in 1912 – so they celebrated their Centenary 5 years ago and are an independent  local charity dedicated to supporting people with sight impairment who live in Huntingdonshire.  The Society provides a wide range of activities and services tailored to the individual needs of our members, their carers and families.  Erika shared with our listeners that they will carry out home visits and outreach service to assess needs and provide information and support to their members. They will also help to identify whether members may be entitled to make applications to assist with their disability and the society also has a visual and mobility aid equipment room in their centre.

The Society holds monthly social meetings for its members and carers in St Neots, St Ives, Ramsey and Huntingdon and also have a sports and leisure group. Two of their most popular activities are the Christmas party and summer outings. The Society holds a regular monthly coffee morning in the All Saints Church in the Market Square in Huntingdon.  This event has gained quite a reputation in the area for having a terrific cake selection and does attract a great number of folk to drop in for a cuppa, relax and listen to the music supplied by one of the members who plays the accordion and buy gifts from the “pop up” stalls and maybe take home a prize from the raffle and tombola.
