Huntingdon’s 2017 Carnival Weekend (12 & 13th August) formed the scene of HCR104fm’s summer outside broadcast marathon. Being the Carnival’s major partner for the weekend presented a big challenge for the totally voluntary run community radio station. Our outside broadcast unit “Ollie”, with its owner and technician, David Trainer in charge of setting up and sound production stood out proudly in the crowds of festival goers. Broadcasting across the Ouse Valley from the Riverside Park on both days involved a good deal of co-ordination.
Our anchor-man, veteran broadcaster Bob Elliott ably commentated upon the happenings of carnival day whilst juggling with the listeners needs for our brand of music. Bob’s unique knowledge of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight aircraft brought a very special moment of nostalgia to the afternoon when the Spitfire flew past in salute.
Our own “Live in Park” on Sunday provided a brilliant platform for 7 local artists and bands. Jessica Davis, Caitlyn, Chris Fox, BlackJack, Déjà Vu, Mizmerize and Zero Charm played to an appreciative crowd of around 2,000 people all relaxing in the lovely warm weather. Our student Zone team did a fantastic job of linking the stage performances and interviews with the listening public.
Job well done.
