The Huntingdonshire Philharmonic Orchestra members are delighted finally to be back playing
together again, and happily looking forward to presenting a concert once more at
Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre in Huntingdon on Saturday 27th November, with an
interesting and varied programme, featuring music by Schubert, Brahms, and Lutoslawski.
Schubert’s Symphony No 8, the ‘Unfinished’ was sent in 1824 to a musical society in Graz in
gratitude for his election as a member, but inexplicably it was never played or publicly known
about for more than 40 years, and sadly he never heard it performed. It has, however,
subsequently become one of his most popular compositions.
Brahms’ Tragic Overture is believed to have been written originally as incidental music for
Goethe’s Faust and was later recast by him as an independent orchestral work.
Lutoslawski, who died in 1994, was one of the major composers of the 20th Century, possibly
the greatest Polish composer since Chopin. His Little Suite was written in 1950 for Chamber
Orchestra as a commission for Warsaw Radio, but revised and rescored in 1951 for full
Symphony Orchestra. The work uses folk melodies from a region of Poland east of Krakow.
The concert will be conducted by Chris Ridley, and starts at 7.30pm
